Wat Bowonniwet Vihara

Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, also known simply as Wat Bowon, is a prominent Buddhist temple in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand.

This historic temple is situated in the Phra Nakhon district, close to the famous Khao San Road and not far from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

It holds significant cultural and religious importance in Thailand and has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century.

Foundation and History

The temple was established in 1829 during the reign of King Rama III. It was founded by King Rama IV, also known as King Mongkut, who later became famous through the novel and movie “The King and I.” 

King Rama IV was ordained as a monk here before ascending the throne. As a result, the temple has a special connection to the Thai royal family.

Architectural Beauty

Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is known for its traditional Thai temple architecture. 

The main hall, or “ubosot,” features intricate details, colorful murals, and a gilded façade. 

Beautifully landscaped gardens surround the temple and are a serene place for worshippers and visitors.

The Phra Phuttha Chinnasi Buddha Image

One of the most revered features of the temple is the Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, a seated Buddha image. 

It is made of bronze and is considered highly sacred. Devotees come to pay their respects and make offerings to this image.

Wat Bowonniwet Vihara has a long history of hosting a community of monks.

It is the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, the head of the Thai Sangha (Buddhist monastic community).
