Thonburi (Thon Buri district)

Thonburi is a district in Bangkok, Thailand, located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River.

It was once the capital of Thailand (then known as Siam) before it was replaced by the current capital, Bangkok, which is situated on the east bank of the river.

Today, Thonburi is part of the larger metropolitan area of Bangkok and is known for its historical significance, cultural attractions, and distinctive atmosphere.

Historical Significance

Thonburi served as the capital of the Kingdom of Thonburi from 1767 to 1782. King Taksin the Great, a revered Thai monarch, established Thonburi as the capital after the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese.

However, Bangkok later replaced it when King Rama I moved the capital to the east bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Cultural Heritage

Thonburi has managed to maintain its cultural heritage and historic charm, with old-style wooden houses and narrow canals that give it a distinct character.

This district provides a glimpse into Thailand’s traditional way of life and contrasts the modern developments on the eastern side of the river.

Transportation

Thonburi is easily accessible from Bangkok’s central business districts. You can reach Thonburi by crossing one of the many bridges spanning the Chao Phraya River, such as the Rama VIII Bridge, Krung Thon Bridge, or Phra Pinklao Bridge.

Additionally, Thonburi is served by various transportation options, including the Chao Phraya Express Boat and the BTS Skytrain, making it relatively easy to explore.

Local Markets and Street Food

Thonburi is known for its vibrant local markets, where you can find fresh produce, street food, and a variety of goods.

The district offers an excellent opportunity to sample delicious Thai street food, often at a fraction of the cost of the more touristy areas in Bangkok.

Historical Landmarks

Thonburi is home to historic temples and landmarks, such as Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan and Wongwian Yai.

These sites showcase the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Thailand.

Peaceful Ambiance

Thonburi has a more laid-back and peaceful atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of central Bangkok.

It’s a great place to explore more flexibly, taking in the historical and cultural sites without the crowds.

Thonburi offers a unique perspective on Thai history and culture and is a fascinating part of Bangkok to explore, whether interested in history and architecture or simply looking for a more tranquil experience in the bustling city.
